I’ve never seen a defective Lego before. Which, considering how many pieces I’ve handled over the years, is actually rather impressive. At first I thought it may be on purpose, as the look actually kind of fits the set of a building getting torn down. The other four in the set are normal, and there’s nothing in the drawings showing an abnormal piece.

I worked a plastic molding machine for a summer job a couple times when I was in college. I think we used to call that a short shot.

Definitely a defect. Something melted the piece, even the interlocking pin looks a bit melted.

It never really occurred to me that Lego could be defective; I’ve never seen a bad piece before.

I have never seen a defective Lego brick like that. So it has to be a rare case. I wonder if defective Lego bricks are more valuable then the good ones?

BINGO!
I work in injection molding as an engineer, and that is in fact correct!

I’ve never seen a defective lego either, and I’ve handled thousands, tens of thousand, hundreds of thousands...

Huh. That brings up a good point. LEGO has some incredible QC

Yeah they do!

Yeah, me neither, until I got one.

I think the mold just didn't get filled.

I got something right? I’m going to have to mark this day down! It doesn’t happen very often.

call or email LEGO, they will happily replace the part for you :)
I think theres even a place on their site where you request a missing/damaged part.

Brown pieces are notoriously brittle. I have an annoying amount of chipped tiles. And jury’s still out on how those new plant-based plastics are.

I have definitely seen a defective Lego brick. We had one when I was a kid, where it was a square brick, but somehow the one bottom corner and the tube bit in the middle werebt entire formed , almost as though someone had shoved the corner onto a belt sander and knocked some of it off, although my memory of it makes it seem like it was a short shot like yours, rather than it got caught in an assembly line and worn down. It’s probably still in the gigantic tub of Lego in my parents’ basement. But yeah, now that only makes two I've heard of. Possibly only one... there's a chance my brick is Mega Blocks, which, frankly, QA not so high there.

I’ve seen a defective LEGO, it’s called a Masterblocks

I think I’ve seen ~2 defective lego pieces in the wild. Something like that once and a slanted piece (four-pin bottom, two-pin top?) with a flat face that had a visual line/cooling defect, though not really a messed up texture. Might have been a small piece or two with sprue left on them, a cutlass, that kind of thing, too. Not sure.

The closest I ever had to a defective piece was a rubber piece on Benny’s spaceship.
The tubing is rubber and had snapped in half when we opened the box. LEGO is very cool about these things and will send you a replace ment piece by mail.

I'll have to check that out :)

Oh yeah that’s what I was thinking of

That’s an incomplete mold, not enough material got into the mold or some kind of air bubble formed inside. Odd how no one caught it especially since most plastic molding places have multiple points of QC, one when it leaves the molding center, and randomly from then on out.

It is surprising, but I guess even the Lego corporation isn't perfect.

Over my 4 decades with LEGO, I’ve had a few pieces that were defective and broke, but never something like this. Their quality control is truly incredible.

Like a mis-stamped coin.

Its pretty incredible how rare this is. There's a replacement piece on the way from Lego.

I think it’s worth keeping on your desk as a reminder that perfection is something that can only be pursued, never achieved.

Honestly, I’ll probably ke ep the defective piece in the set. It really does work for the look of the set. But hey, free window frame. Lego are expensive!
